#FBF: Mariah Carey

The obsession with Mariah Carey started when I was around 8-years-old. Her songs were catchy, she dressed really cool in “Dreamlover,” what more could a little girl in the ‘90s want in favorite singer? That all changed when I realized she wasn’t just some white girl with a set of pipes, but she had a black dad and a white mom just like me. At the time this was huge because you didn’t really see too much of that, and when you’re a mixed kid from a town that’s 97% white, you start to feel a little out of place. I had a lot of issues with being half black growing up and I have another site where I’ll talk about that topic later this year, for now we’ll get back to my love of the ultimate diva.

She was definitely the first famous person I recognized as mixed and because of that I became attached, but what is this month all about? It’s voices people. I don’t care what you say about that woman’s breakdowns, divorces, or giant ring she’s got on her left hand right now – her voice is untouchable. Those high notes slay me and in the comfort of solitude I sing along with all my heart, obviously never reaching her level because well, no one can. Ugh, Ariana Grande…I had high hopes for your vocal skillz and then you went and got kind of weird with fame. Shout out though because she was glorious on Victorious. Anyways, no one will ever compare to Carey in my books in terms of voices that never fail to win me over.

Being that I came from a low income household growing up, when she did the Rainbow tour – I could not go. You don’t know how much I wanted to be in the audience, especially if she did “Crybaby.” If you’ve never heard this amazing gem, please go listen now. It had Snoop Dogg and it’s the coolest song, ever. Okay, maybe not ever but it was my personal favorite on that album. So no, I didn’t get to see her then, but I did get to her thanks to Jimmy Kimmel twice, and a Christmas special taping. Fun fact: the first time she did Kimmel and I was able to go, I got teary eyed when she walked out to do her interview. Fingers crossed I’ll get to that Vegas show one day – is that still a thing? I think I just saw footage on TMZ, so…yeah, we’ll say it’s a thing.

I’ve heard it’s not that great, but come on – Mariah’s never been a performer. She’s a damn singer and can’t rely on lip syncing and dancing like some pop stars who currently reside in Sin City. Shade thrown, hope you caught it Britney. Ms. Spears, that’s a whole other topic for another day. I’ll leave on this note. Mariah Carey has one of my favorite voices and I’m not sure any other woman could ever match the excellence she contains in those pipes. As for the rest of the month, we’ll look at my country love, a California girl and a pusher. Okay, I will say right now that Katy Perry is not that Cali girl. Just want to clear that up now.
