Sudanese Immigrants Head to Capitol Hill to Push for Change in Sudan

Locals set tyres on fire and block a side street leading to their neighborhood in the Sudanese capital Khartoum to stop military vehicles from driving through the area

The military council, which ousted longtime president Omar al-Bashir on 11 April, had offered to reopen negotiations following the assault but the offer was rejected by protest leaders who demanded justice for those killed in what has been dubbed the Eid massacre.

Sudanese protest leaders dismissed a call yesterday for talks with the ruling generals, saying the military can not be serious about negotiations while troops keep shooting and killing protesters.

The opposition, which is demanding civilian government, says 113 people were killed in the storming of a protest camp on Monday and subsequent crackdown. The military council said it was willing to negotiate at any time, state news agency SUNA reported.

They also said "outlaws" have attacked and tried to set fire to police stations in various parts of the country, posing a threat to Sudan's stability.

The Arab League stands with Sudan and supports its security, stability and national unity, leading to the peaceful transition of power safely while preserving the role played by Sudan in Joint Arab Action System, the Secretary-General said.

At Khartoum airport, Abiy was greeted by Lieutenant General Shams El Din Kabbashi, spokesman for Sudan's ruling Transitional Military Council. They established a military council which took over governance, while angry protesters continued a sit-in in front of the Defence Ministry in Khartoum.

Negotiations began over when the military would hand over power and what the government would look like, but all agreements were terminated following Monday's attack.

The raid on Monday marked a pivotal moment in the weeks-long struggle between the powerful TMC and opposition groups over who should lead Sudan's transition to democracy.

"The United States remains firmly committed to working with the people of Sudan along with our global partners, in pursuit of a peaceful solution in Sudan", she said.

But doctors said Wednesday that 40 bodies had been pulled from the Nile, sending the death toll soaring to at least 108.

The decision opens the door for more regional and global pressures on the military junta in Khartoum as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have already marked their distance and called for a negotiated settlement to ensure power transition to civilians in Sudan.

"With this senseless slaughter the [transitional military council] has completely destroyed the trust of the Sudanese people and crushed the people's hope for a new era of respect for human rights and respect for the right to protest without fear", Jackson added.

Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan said on Wednesday there would be "no restriction" in talks with the leaders behind the months-long street protests. It was not immediately clear what the suspension would mean in practice.
