Four people have been killed after an unidentified man opened fire at the Palms Motel in Darwin, the capital of Australia's Northern Territory.

The alleged shooter is expected to be charged with four counts of murder, police have said.

The gunman was reportedly a 45-year-old Caucasian who was paroled in January and was "well known to police".

Police responded to the suburb of Stuart Park Tuesday night at around 7:00 p.m. local time over reports of multiple shots fired, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. "We know four people have lost their lives and there are a number of other casualties", he tweeted from the United Kingdom on Tuesday.

Police believe the shooter was acting alone.
