Bill Buckner dies at 69

Former Boston Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner had over 2,700 career hits

Bill Buckner, a longtime baseball star who spoofed his crucial late-career World Series error on Curb Your Enthusiasm, died today.

Too many will remember him first as the guy who made one of the most famous errors in baseball history, which it was: The ball going through his legs in the 1986 World Series has been, and will be, shown as often as nearly any highlight or lowlight in the game's history. The New York Mets beat Buckner's Boston Red Sox that night and would go on to win the series in seven games. They didn't break the "curse" until 2004.

Buckner compiled 2,715 base hits, putting him within shouting range of the 3,000-hit mark that often defines a Hall of Fame career. The former first baseman, who won the National League batting title in 1980, owns 2,715 career hits and a.289 lifetime batting average. Traded to the Chicago Cubs prior to the 1977 season, Buckner spent his most productive seasons on the North Side of Chicago.

Why losing Thursday's opening World Cup game matters
India's batsmen were "blown away" on the green wicket, the Hindustan Times said, sounding the alarm for their World Cup hopes. The meeting was attended by the officials of the cricket boards of India , Pakistan, Sri Lanka , Bangladesh and Afghanistan .

The Red Sox loss extended the team's World Series drought to 68 years.

Buckner would be released by the Red Sox midway through the 1987 series and spend the next three seasons with the California Angels and Kansas City Royals.

Bobby Valentine, Buckner's teammate and a former Red Sox manager, first shared the news of Buckner's death on Twitter.

According to Jody's statement, Buckner battled Lewy body dementia, which, according to the Alzheimer's Association, "is a type of progressive dementia that leads to a decline in thinking, reasoning and independent function because of abnormal microscopic deposits that damage brain cells over time". But life is not all good things.

Vin Sculley's call of the play has been played throughout baseball broadcasts ever since: "With two out, three and two to Mookie Wilson. little roller up along first...behind the bag!.it gets through Buckner. here comes Knight and the Mets win it!" My heartfelt prayers go out to his wife Jody, and their three attractive children, Brittany, Christen and Bobby.

Buckner had i significant ties to the Pacific Northwest, playing on the fabled Spokane Indians teams affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers (and managed by Tommy Lasorda) and spending years in Boise after his retirement from baseball. "Our hearts are broken, but we're at peace knowing he is in the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ".
