Over 200 BC firefighting personnel being deployed to fight wildfires in Alberta

The Chuckegg Creek wildfire near High Level grew to over 23,000 hectares Sunday

It is no small task to evacuate one of Alberta's northern-most communities, almost 750 kilometres north of Edmonton.

Derek Gagnon, an information officer for Alberta Wildfire, said there is not now a threat to the town, about 450 kilometres north of Grande Prairie.

On Sunday, the blaze was about 25 kilometres away and officials estimated it at about 25,000 hectares.

The goal of the Evacuation Alert is to inform residents of a potential or current threat which could lead to an Evacuation Order.

The fire near High Level, which is 740 kilometres north of Edmonton, has not damaged any buildings in town or in the Dene Tha' First Nation's communities.

Today throughout the region temperatures are ranging in the mid 20's Celsius and fire warning range from very high to extreme.

Scott Elliot, an incident commander with Alberta Wildfire, did have some good news on Monday, saying that the fire had shifted away from High Level.

The order for the Bushe River Reserve, located southeast of the town, was issued at 8 p.m. Monday.

Fire officials say the winds continue to be favourable as crews battle a large wildfire burning a few kilometres from a northwestern Alberta town.

It says that the town, which has over 3,000 residents, isn't in immediate danger but that residents should be vigilant as the situation could change rapidly.

"People are of course afraid because they remember the wildfires of Fort McMurray, but we talked to a lot of the residents and reaffirmed that we are being proactive", High Level Mayor Crystal McAteer said in the conference call with reporters.

It notes crews can be deployed out-of-province for up to 19 days but can be recalled at any time.

While there's no imminent threat to the town, Alberta Emergency Alert issued an information alert about the fire Sunday afternoon. Several homes were at risk, and residents were being evacuated.
