2020's Call Of Duty reportedly switches studio mid-development

Call of Duty 2020 upheaval

Kotaku's sources say that Cold War setting will be folded into Treyarch's vision for Black Ops 5.

Raven and Sledgehammer were originally supposed to lead the development of the 2020 Call of Duty, and according to Kotaku, the plan was to set its story mode during the Cold War. However, others are less concerned, citing the fact that there is a solid base to work from thanks to Black Ops 4, which should lead to less changes during development. Advanced Warfare was released by Sledgehammer in 2014, followed by Treyarch's Black Ops III in 2015 and Infinity Ward's Infinite Warfare in 2016.

As an example, Infinity Ward will be handling this year's COD launch, which is expected to be Modern Warfare 4.

With the next generation of consoles expected in 2020, the Kotaku report also stated that Black Ops 5 will be "cross-gen" - available both on current and next-gen systems.

It is reported that Treyarch Studios will be working on a continuation of the fan favorite Black Ops series, with Call of Duty: Black Ops 5.

Schreier, well known among the industry for his inciteful inside tracks at several developers around the world, focused more specifically on what's going on behind the scenes for next years Call of Duty game.

This news comes during a odd time for Activision and Call of Duty.

"Internally, Activision executives have started to talk about embracing free-to-play as a revenue model-once anathema to the publisher-and, three sources say, are looking into offering a free-to-play component for this year's new Modern Warfare, although the specifics may not be finalized yet".

Britain Warns of Conflict 'by Accident' in Gulf

And according to the E3 organisers, Infinity Ward will be discussing the new Call of Duty in a panel at the Coliseum event. Some within Activision have remained resistant to the idea.

However, Kotaku's report suggests that this has changed, partly as a result of recent leadership changes within Sledgehammer and disagreements between the studio and Raven. Two people familiar with the project described it as a mess.

But it appears the standard formula has been upset, meaning the first Call of Duty game appearing on the PS5 will be Black Ops 5.

Activision declined to comment.
