Russia Voices Concern over Iran Tensions: There Were No Assurances by Pompeo

Pompeo crashes Brussels meeting of EU diplomats for Iran talks

"I'm not sure we have all the capacity of that, but I think we now have a common understanding of the places where we were hung up, which I think we can work our way through", Pompeo said after the talks at Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi.

SHAPIRO: When Secretary Pompeo and Foreign Minister Lavrov spoke to reporters, what did they have to say about Iran?

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he would have a "frank conversation" with Pompeo on Iran on Tuesday, saying he expected the top U.S. diplomat was pressuring the Europeans to reject Iranian overtures for relief from USA sanctions.

"We see that there are suspicions and prejudices", Lavrov told Pompeo at the start of their talks.

Lavrov however repeated Moscow's denials of interference and said it was "absolute fiction" that Russian Federation had colluded with the Trump campaign.

"We want and we are ready to deal with cyber-security issues along with our American partners, without any politicization", he said.

Government Brexit talks with Labour face deadline
Anger at the Brexit morass is fueling support for smaller parties ahead of a European Parliament election next week. Independence Party (though suffering net losses overall) made some gains in areas that had voted heavily to leave.

The exchange follows the publication of the Mueller report, which found that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 United States election but did not conclude that the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow.

"If Russia engaged in that in 2020, it would put our relationship in an even worse place than it has been".

He said Democracy can not be brought about by force.

Trump, he said, wants the United States and Russian Federation "to do everything we can" to create a future that is "more successful" for both countries and the world as a whole.

Russian Federation has interests in oil projects in Venezuela and has propped up Mr Maduro's regime with loans.

Speaking for almost two hours late into the evening in Putin's forested dacha in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Pompeo became the highest-ranking American to meet the Russian leader in 10 months.

He stressed that the initiative to improve U.S. -Russia relations is "about trying to find solutions, compromises, places where there is overlapping interest so you can make progress at unlocking some of the most hard problems that are facing us".

KIM: Well, Pompeo said he urged Russian Federation, in his words, to support the Venezuelan people.

His inquiry had cast a pall over U.S. There is a growing list of issues dividing the two countries - Russia's interference in the 2016 elections, Syria, Venezuela and, with tensions now growing in the Persian Gulf, Iran. At a meeting between the US and Russian delegations, Putin referred to the Mueller report as a "very objective investigation" and reiterated Russia's official position that there was no "collusion" with the Trump campaign.

"I've formed the impression that your president wants to fix Russia-U.S. ties and contacts and wants to solve issues which are of common interest for us", Putin told Pompeo.

But he added: "We have also made clear to the Iranians that if American interests are attacked, we will most certainly respond in an appropriate fashion".
