Trump proposes an application fee for asylum-seekers

President Donald Trump speaks as he welcomes members of the Baylor women’s basketball team who are the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball National Champions to the Oval Office of the White House in Washington Monday

President Donald Trump continues his stance against immigrants into the country by now recommending a fee for those seeking asylum in the United States, and for those seeking work permits in the country.

But immigrant advocates say the Trump administration's efforts to restrict asylum protections harms people legitimately seeking refuge from violence and persecution.

In a presidential memorandum, Trump directed Attorney General William Barr and acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan to address the ongoing situation at the southern border.

The orders given by Mr Trump to the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security mark a dramatic shift in United States policy.

Trump also wants to charge asylum-seekers to process their asylum and employment authorization applications.

Venezuela's opposition leader declares 'final phase' of 'usurpation'
Speaking from a military base, Guaido and his supporters say the time has come to confront Maduro's government. Maduro said on Tuesday he had spoken with military leaders and that they had shown him "their total loyalty".

It is not clear how the orders will be implemented; Trump gave officials 90 days to decide on regulations to accomplish the memorandum's aims.

The letter includes a directive that would require asylum seekers to pay an application fee, as well as a fee for anyone seeking a work permit.

The president also promised to fix asylum laws.

Issued Monday evening, the memo also calls on the Department of Homeland Security to reallocate resources and personnel to deal with asylum claims. Work permits would be revoked completely for those who crossed the border illegally until their asylum claims are adjudicated.

An impasse between the US lawmakers and Trump regarding funding for the wall on the US-Mexico border led to the United States' longest-ever partial government shutdown recently.

Sri Lanka bans burqas for 'public protection' after bomb attacks
President Maithripala Sirisena said the ban was meant to ensure national security, helping authorities to identify people. Dozens of suspects have since been arrested in security forces' raids, but officials warn more militants remain at large.

Trump derided the current immigration laws as "weak, ineffective and unsafe", but he has made little effort to work with Congress to change them.

Most of those arriving said they were fleeing violence and poverty, and many requested asylum under U.S. and worldwide law.

"The provision to process cases in 180 days has been on the books for over two decades", said Ashley Tabaddor, president of the immigration judges' union.

Under the current system, asylum seekers who enter the U.S. both legally and illegally are allowed to work while their claims are processed. While asylum seekers are not economic migrants, in my experience, they are mostly poor. It was the latest move by top justice officials seeking to reshape legal precedent in the country's USA immigration courts.

In March, there were more than 92,000 arrests of undocumented migrants for illegal entry on the southern border, up from 37,390 in March 2018 - the majority of whom were families, according to data from Customs and Border Protection.

Children killed during Sri Lanka gunbattle between troops and Islamist militants
