Climate change protesters pledge to bring Nottingham to a standstill

A crowd of protesters yesterday gathered in Hyde Park as they prepare to conduct a series of demonstrations in the capital

Environmental protesters have blocked Waterloo Bridge in London as they try to bring the city to a standstill.

The climate change demonstrators have gathered in roads in London landmarks including Waterloo Bridge, Marble Arch, Parliament Square, Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus.

The order restricted protesters to the area around Marble Arch.

The Metropolitan Police said on Tuesday evening that more than 200 people had been arrested over the two days of disruption.

Three men and two women were arrested at the United Kingdom offices of energy company Royal Dutch Shell on suspicion of criminal damage.

Transport for London warned that some roads in Westminster and the West End remained blocked as the rush hour approached.

Campaigners want governments to declare a climate and ecological emergency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2025, halt biodiversity loss and be led by new "citizens' assemblies on climate and ecological justice".

The group held five sites overnight, with protesters on Waterloo Bridge attaching themselves to a lorry to prevent police from being able to move them. At least one person was arrested by police for criminal damage.

The movement, which is demanding the British government takes urgent action on climate change and wildlife declines, has received support from actress and activist Emma Thompson and former archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams.

At Oxford Circus, Extinction Rebellion campaigners left a boat with the slogan Tell the Truth written on the side. "We must act now".

Fox said the protesters attached themselves to vehicles and to each other using bicycle locks.

In March, the group wrote an article for Left Foot Forward claiming that their "spring uprising" was going to make the government sit up and listen.

The disruption follows similar action last November when thousands of protesters occupied five central London bridges. "If we don't do anything to change this, our children will die".
