'The Daily Show' recaps WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's embarrassing arrest

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange

Julian Assange may yet face rape charges in Sweden as the battle for extradition of the WikiLeaks founder heats up.

In the letter sent on Friday to Home Secretary Sajid Javid, which was tweeted by Labour politician Stella Creasy, more than 70 MPs called on him "to stand with the victims of sexual violence".

Assange was arrested on Thursday by British police after spending seven years holed inside the embassy.

Assange sought asylum at Ecuador's premises in London's chic Knightsbridge district after a British judge ruled he should be extradited to Sweden to face the sexual assault allegations.

A preliminary investigation against Mr Assange, 47, was dropped in 2017, however the alleged victim's lawyer has stated "we will do everything we can" to resume the case.

A witness who prosecutors were seeking to interview and an associate of Assange based in Europe - who also requested anonymity - said that before his arrest Assange anxious that USA prosecutors would also bring charges related to WikiLeaks' publication of Central Intelligence Agency computer hacking tools, which the website described as its "Vault 7" cache.

The British MPs also noted that while Ecuador had warned British and U.S. officials that they would rescind Assange's asylum, Swedish authorities were kept in the dark.

It added that "justice has already been denied" in some parts of the investigation because of Assange's unavailability.

Asked if Trump's attitude towards WikiLeaks has changed, Pence said, "I think the president always - as you and the media do - always welcomes information".

If the country does decide to go ahead and submit its own extradition request, it would be up to United Kingdom courts to decide on whether it should take precedence over the expected petition from the US.

He said the testimony of the women who have been involved makes it "essential" that Assange face justice, to either be cleared or convicted.

After his dramatic arrest, he was taken to Westminster Magistrates' Court and found guilty of a British charge of breaching bail. But Ecuador abruptly withdrew its asylum and invited the police to arrest Assange on Thursday.

English Premier League: Everton edge Arsenal to stop Gunners from going third
Arsenal manager, Unai Emery , has said Bernd Leno registered a "perfect" performance in their 1-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday. The Gunners could qualify for Europe's premier club competition if Emery's side win the Europa League this term.

"Though the Secretary of State does have very limited powers to interfere, I don't see that discretion being used", she said.

The battle between Assange and the US government was always going to be epic, involving concepts like free speech, journalists' rights, national interests, even treason.

Sweden, meanwhile, has tapped prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson to look into whether the reopening of the rape inquiry can be pursued.

Assange's next court appearance was set for May 2 via prison video-link in relation to the extradition case, a process that involves several layers of appeal that could take several years.

Former Home Secretary Lord Blunkett said people giving Assange "unqualified support" were being "extremely unwise".

This precedent means that any journalist can be extradited for prosecution in the United States for having published truthful information about the United States.
