Omar al-Bashir, long-term President of Sudan, was toppled from power by the military on Thursday and placed under "heavy guard", following months of protests against the government and its handling of a severe economic crisis in the country.

The military's coup brought an end to a president who came to power in a coup of his own in 1989, backed by the military and Islamist hard-liners, and who had survived multiple blows that could have brought him down.

Facing the most sustained challenge to his rule yet, Bashir had counted on steadfast support from the security establishment he had nurtured for three decades to see him through. Since then, the military has stuck by him, even as he was forced to allow the separation of South Sudan and as he became a pariah in many countries, wanted by by the worldwide war crimes tribunal for atrocities in Darfur.

But it was a government decision to triple bread prices that brought protesters onto the streets in December past year, as the country grappled with regular shortages of food, medicines and foreign currency.

Shortly after the announcement, Twitter users circulated photos showing former detainees being welcomed by protesters as they joined demonstrations against Omar al-Bashir.

Sudanese opposition parties and professional associations on Thursday voiced their "total rejection" of the "military coup" that appears to have removed President Omar al-Bashir from power.

The demonstrators have braved repeated volleys of tear gas from members of the NISS since they began camping outside the complex on Saturday, protest organizers say.

"I hope our revolution will achieve its goal", said Alaa Salah, dubbed the protest movement's "Nubian queen", after a video clip went viral of her conducting chants with demonstrators outside army headquarters.

CBS News spoke to one Sudanese woman who returned to her native country from NY previous year to join the uprising, only to find herself imprisoned. Both countries poured hundreds of millions of dollars into propping up Bashir's regime and the Sudanese economy as Gulf states vie for influence on the Horn of Africa.

Al-Bashir had always been a pariah in many countries and he's even wanted by the global war crimes tribunal for atrocities in Darfur.
