Trump designates Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a 'terrorist organization'

After President Trump announced Monday that the United States now officially considers Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization, the president said that anyone doing business with the IRGC is "bankrolling" terrorism.

The Iranian Supreme National Security Council on Monday named the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) a terrorist organization, and the US government a sponsor of terror.

The designation as a foreign terrorist organisation will allow the U.S. to impose further sanctions on Iran.

Administration officials have said the step will further isolate Iran and make clear that the US won't tolerate Iran's continued support for rebel groups and others that destabilize the Middle East.

"The Administration's action will increase the financial pressure and isolation of Iran and deprive the regime of resources it uses for its terrorist activities", the White House said.

In that regard this is a continuation of the State Department claiming Iran had killed over 600 USA soldiers during the occupation of Iraq.

By designating the IRGC as a terrorist force, Mr Trump wants to "send a clear message" not only to the country but also to those still having an economic relationship with Iran, despite the ban issued by the USA during the summer of 2018.

The State Department said that the Guards have been engaged in terrorist activity since the group's inception, including the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia that killed 19 Americans, and a foiled plan to attack the Saudi ambassador to the United States on USA soil.

In a later tweet, he added: "We must help the people of Iran get back their freedom".

In recent months, the Trump administration has sought to impose "maximum pressure" on Iran's regime, after abandoning the nuclear deal brokered during the Obama administration.

The designation represents the strongest salvo yet by the Trump administration to choke off Iran's global resources and target its regional terror operations, which continue almost unfettered in hotspots such as Yemen, Syria, and Iraq.

The department now designates 60 groups, such as al-Qaida and the Islamic State and their various affiliates, Hezbollah and numerous militant Palestinian factions, as "foreign terrorist organizations".

"The IRGC is interwoven into the Iranian economy".

The Islamic Republic had warned it would retaliate in kind last week, after reports of the Trump administration plan first surfaced.

Venezuela's ANC strips Juan Guaido of parliamentary immunity
The action must be approved by the National Assembly _ steps that weren't taken in Guaido's case. In January, Guaido declared himself Venezuela's interim president and vowed to overthrow Maduro.

Israel has long seen Iran as its greatest foe, citing its leaders' hostile rhetoric, suspect nuclear program, development of long-range missiles, and support for anti-Israeli militant groups such as Hizballah.

And this should send a urgent message to lawmakers, he said.

The Foreign Terrorist Organization designation now will be reviewed by Congress.

The IRGC designation is seen as the latest in a series of steps Mr. Trump has taken to boost Mr. Netanyahu's fortunes, including USA recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

"Thank you for responding to another important request of mine, which serves the interests of our countries and countries of the region", he said.

"The designation of IRGC as a Foreign Terrorist Organization is precedent setting".
