Theresa May to hold Brexit crisis talks with Jeremy Corbyn

EU top official: UK to 'face abyss' after failure to back Brexit options

Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay said the government would accept a soft Brexit if parliament voted for it.

Sterling held near the day's highs as traders interpreted Theresa May's announcement of cross-party talks with the opposition Labour party as a sign Britain could end up with close ties to the European Union after Brexit.

In the most recent set of votes on Monday, a proposal to keep the United Kingdom in a customs union common tariff zone with the EU came closest, losing by just six votes.

BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg explains that this could mean Mrs May is likely to compromise on having a closer relationship with the European Union after Brexit than she might originally have liked.

Meanwhile, if the Corbyn talks failed, May said she would put "a number of options for the future [EU] relationship" to "a series of votes" in parliament "to determine which course to pursue".

The United Kingdom was supposed to leave the European Union last Friday, but, three years after Britons narrowly voted for Brexit in a referendum, it is still unclear how, when or even whether it will exit the bloc.

"A no deal on 12 April at midnight looks more and more likely", European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Wednesday, adding that would bring disruption for EU citizens and businesses, but much worse damage economic for Britain.

"The Prime Minister's deal won't go through and no deal in law is taken off the table, then the effect of that is either a soft Brexit or no Brexit at all".

Some of the lawmakers who are trying to force the government to ask for an extension to the two-year Article 50 negotiating period also want to hold a third round of so-called indicative votes on Monday on Brexit options proposed by members of parliament.

Corbyn said he wants a customs union with the EU and continuing access to "vital" markets.

Four choices are being considered by british lawmakers to Prime Minister Theresa May Brexit bargain, in hopes of finding a plan which could command majority support.

The talks provide a final opportunity for the U.K.to avoid a no-deal Brexit after Ms.

Meanwhile, May's move infuriated pro-Brexit Conservatives who say Britain must make a clean break with the European Union in order to take control of its laws and trade policy.

The Prime Minister knows how odd a position that is for her to be in, which is why she wants to make sure everyone knows who have forced her into it: Tory Brexiteers and the Democratic Unionist Party. The deferred Brexit deadline will expire on 12 April. The bottom line is still clear - the Good Friday Agreement and frictionless border needs to be protected.

Dr Caroline Johnson, Tory MP for Sleaford and North Hykeham, told the Prime Minister she understood the need to balance risks but said: "If it comes to the point when we have to balance the risk of a no-deal Brexit versus letting down the country and ushering in a Marxist, anti-Semite led Government, what does she think at that point is the lowest risk?"
