US President Donald Trump has announced Secretary of Homeland Security Kisrtjen Nielsen is leaving her position.

After CBS News reported Nielsen meant to resign Sunday from the position she has held since December 2017, the president confirmed on Twitter she would be leaving her position.

Commissioner Kevin McAleenan is a veteran border official, according to The Associated Press.

Nielsen's relationship with the president had always been said to be hard.

Though Trump aides were eyeing a staff shake-up at Homeland Security and had already withdrawn the nomination for another key immigration post, the development Sunday was unexpected.

The source notes Trump's frustration with the current asylum laws, and his desire for individuals who work for the administration to just stop central American asylum seekers from entering the United States, contrary to the law.

Nielsen became known for her vigorous defense of the "zero tolerance" policy resulting in family separations at the border, blaming Congress for a "loophole" in the laws that needs to be fixed.

He said in a statement, however, that she should not serve as a scapegoat, blasting Trump for "terrible and cruel policies". "She was prepared to resign, but this confirms what we're hearing, that this meeting did not go well and she ultimately had to resign because the president forced her to". CBS News first reported Nielsen's impending departure, which Mr. Trump announced after a 5 p.m. meeting with Nielsen at the White House.

But in recent weeks, as a new wave of migration has taxed resources along the border and as Trump sought to regain control of the issue for his 2020 re-election campaign, tensions flared anew.

On Friday, US media reported that Trump also pulled his nominee to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement department - saying he wanted someone "tougher" to lead the department - a sub-agency of Nielsen's.

Trump recently threatened to close the border with Mexico, or parts of it, if Congress did not change US laws to fix what he called immigration "loopholes".

Nielsen, 46, has held the position since December 2017. Asked why he made the decision, which shocked Senate Republicans who were confident Vitiello would be confirmed, Mr. Trump said his administration was taking a "tougher" direction as it pertains to immigration.
