USA prosecutors, Transportation Department scrutinizing Boeing 737 MAX development

Lion Air's Boeing 737 Max 8 airplane

Boeing's boss has released a video message and open letter addressed to "airlines, passengers and the aviation community" in an attempt to provide reassurance after two crashes in five months involving its 737 Max planes.

The announcement comes after an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet went down on March 10, killing 157 people.

In a statement sent to Reuters, the reinsurance giant also confirmed its connection to manufacturer Boeing, whose 737 Max fleet is now grounded following two fatal crashes in five months.

Fin24 reported earlier that the sovereignty, integrity and role of civil aviation regulators have become the focus of debate in aviation circles since the fatal crash of an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8.

Investigators looking to uncover the causes must answer one of the biggest questions: Was the plane's software to blame?

Ferrari confident Australian GP struggle won't set 2019 tone
It was a less impressive showing from Ferrari , while Red Bull began life with a new engine provider in the shape of Honda. He is now tied in second place with Juan Manuel Fangio, and is one triumph ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Alain Prost.

After a 10 percent drop last week that wiped almost $25 billion off its market share, Boeing stock slid about 1.8 percent on Monday.

Separately, the US Department of Transportation's inspector general was also scrutinising the FAA's oversight of Boeing and the development of the 737 MAX, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"Safety is at the core of who we are at Boeing", he wrote.

Boeing has promised a software update for the new system, which was introduced with the 737 Max.

The system is created to bring the plan's nose down in the event the 737 is at risk of stalling - but can have catastrophic results if sensors receive erroneous information.

U.S. Rep. Devin Nunes sues Twitter, users for $250M
Some users pledged to help it obtain a larger Twitter audience than Nunes, whose official Twitter account has 391,000 followers. He alleges that the social media site did this purposefully to elevate the alleged defamatory statements made against him.

A flight deck computer's response to an apparently faulty angle-of-attack sensor is at the heart of the ongoing probe into the Lion Air crash.

FAA-accredited Boeing employees notably certified the MCAS system, sources say. But no conclusive evidence yet links the two accidents.

Under a programme, known as the Organisation Designation Authorisation (ODA), employees of Boeing are accredited by the FAA to assist in approving the aircraft - including design, production, flight tests, maintenance and other systems - as well as signing off on the training procedures of pilots on new planes.

According to one aviation expert who requested anonymity, Boeing had readied some modifications for the system by the end of 2018 but the regulatory approval and subsequent installation of the changes were delayed by the five-week United States government shutdown.
