USA senate votes to end support for Saudi war

The Latest: Senate votes to end US support of Yemen war

Information Minister Moammar al-Iryani denounced the vote, saying it would only "embolden Iran and empower its proxy", the rebels known as Houthis.

Trump's support for Saudi Arabia has been a point of tension with Congress since the killing of USA -based activist and writer Jamal Khashoggi past year. Trump has vowed to veto the resolution if it passed through the Democrat-led House.

The resolution would not curtail USA special forces involved in fighting al Qaeda or allied terrorist groups - a mission that Congress explicitly authorized in 2001.

Yemen's conflict erupted in 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, forcing the internationally recognized government to flee overseas. But the Saudi-led effort, which has at times targeted civilian facilities and prevented aid shipments from getting to Yemenis, has been faulted by human rights organizations for exacerbating what the United Nations has deemed the world's worst humanitarian catastrophe.

The West, including the US, has provided the coalition with billions of dollars in arms, in addition to logistical support.

Jussie Smollett Enters Not Guilty Plea On Charges Of Faking His Attack
Smollett". "We look forward to complete transparency and the truth coming out", Glandian said. Police and prosecutors have said that Smollett hired two brothers to stage the attack.

Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., defended USA involvement, describing it as "intelligence support that helps construct no strike lists that enable humanitarian efforts and protect humanitarian aid workers", and "not the tip of the spear".

As Saudi-led coalition airstrikes claimed thousands of lives over the years, mostly in northern Yemen where the Houthis are based, the USA insisted it plays no role in targeting Yemenis.

United States activities in Yemen began in March 2015.

Half of Yemen's population relies on food aid to survive, placing them in immediate danger of starving to death after coalition forces blockaded the port city of Hodeidah a year ago.

"We have been providing the bombs that the Saudi-led coalition is using, we have been refueling their planes before they drop those bombs, and we have been assisting with intelligence", Sanders said.

Cleveland also is expected to add defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson and defensive end Olivier Vernon this offseason. It included calls from Browns receiver Jarvis Landry , Giants GM Dave Gettleman and a text message from Anderson.

The Senate is poised to vote Wednesday on ending USA support for the Saudi Arabian-led coalition fighting in Yemen, legislation the White House has threatened to veto. Will there be political fallout for a president failing to accede to the will of Congress on matters of war and peace?

The U.S. role in this needlessly destructive war is unlikely to end any time soon. "We need cooperation from Yemen, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia to defeat these terrorists". Todd Young (R-IN) said: "It offends my sensibilities-and I know it offends the sensibilities of all Americans-that there are countries in this day and age that are using food as a weapon of war".

Many lawmakers have taken issue with the number of civilian deaths in Yemen's conflict and have been calling for an end of U.S. military support ever since the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul last October.

The resolution is but the latest bipartisan rebuke of Saudi Arabia over the humanitarian crisis in Yemen and the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi was killed and dismembered inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, his remains have not been found. It wasn't immediately clear how a US cutting of ties with the coalition could impact that campaign.

The resolution must still be taken up in the House, where members passed a almost identical resolution to end US participation in the Yemen war earlier this year. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., right, speaks at a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, on a reintroduction of a resolution to end US support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen.
