Ontario to ban cellphones from classrooms

"Beginning next school year, cellphones will no longer be allowed in the classroom unless they are required for educational purposes, health, and medical purposes, or to support special needs", says Thompson.

The ban would prohibit the use of cellphones during instructional time.

According to The Canadian Press, "Ontario is set to announce this week that cellphones will be banned in classrooms, starting in the next school year".

"What I think is problematic is when people use their phones to text their friends either within the classroom or outside the classroom - and would not be condoned for use for the teacher".

The ban follows government conducted education consultations a year ago, in which 97 per cent of respondents stated they favoured restrictions on phones in class.

Britian votes to ask European Union to delay Brexit

NDP MPP Ian Arthur said his party supports the idea in general but teachers and school boards now have the power to ban cellphones.

The Green party questioned why a government focused on cutting red tape is introducing "a top-down regulation that complicates things for educators on the front line".

However, surveys conducted by the Conservative government found that 97 percent of respondents favored a cellphone ban.

Cellphones will soon be banned in Ontario classrooms.

A number of schools already have similar policies in place, including Limestone District School Board in Kingston. The board opted to give teachers greater latitude to integrate smartphones into classwork.

The Peel District School Board policy states that students "will use devices responsibly" only after getting permission and direction from teachers.

"When the school day starts, the phones go off", one senior government source said.

The Ontario Public School Boards' Association did not provide comment Tuesday, but in its submission to the government consultations it had urged the province to continue allowing school boards to make their own decisions.
