Paul Manafort charged by NY prosecutors with 16 further crimes

Ex-Trump campaign head faces 2nd sentencing in as many weeks

He apologised to the judge from a wheelchair to "all those negatively affected by my actions", acknowledging that he did not express such regret when sentenced days ago by Ellis for bank and tax fraud.

Jackson also harshly criticized Manafort for years of deception that extended even into her own courtroom and the grand jury.

"It's hard to overstate the number of lies, the amount of fraud involved. and there is no good explanation to warrant the leniency requested", she said.

Jackson acknowledged Manafort's generosity and care for his family and other causes, calling them "commendable", and said she did not discount that she did "not know everything that there is" to Paul Manafort, or will be to him.

Last week, in a federal court in Virginia, Manafort was sentenced to almost four years in prison (47 months) in a separate case, involving bank and tax fraud.

The sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III of Alexandria, Virginia, stirred debate about whether it was too light because it was far less than the roughly 20 years Manafort had faced under federal sentencing guidelines.

Manafort's primary defense attorney Kevin Downing was not aware of the new Manhattan charges as he exited the federal court in Washington, DC, after the sentencing Wednesday.

In the Central time zone, in cities such as Chicago, Dallas and New Orleans, the difference is eight hours, instead of nine. I even object to the implication that I am wasting something valuable if I stay in bed after the sun has risen.

Manafort, the judge chided, lied to members of Congress and the American public, adding, "If people don't have the facts democracy doesn't work".

"Please let my wife and I be together", he said, playing the age card; he is about to turn 70.

"The question of whether there was any collusion with Russian Federation...was not presented in this case, period, therefore it was not resolved by this case", said Jackson. In all, Manafort will spend around seven-and-a-half years in jail for a variety of crimes related to consulting work he did in Ukraine prior to joining the Trump campaign.

But Jackson dismissed his plea for no more prison time on the charges of conspiring to launder money and tamper with witnesses.

Manafort pleaded guilty September 14 in the Washington case to a wide-ranging conspiracy involving obstruction of justice, money laundering, secret overseas bank accounts and false statements to the Justice Department.

On Wednesday's broadcast of MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports", Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) stated that "Paul Manafort caught a break" in the overall sentence he received. The 66-year-old Stone has pled not guilty to all of the charges and denied that in 2016, he collaborated with WikiLeaks' Julian Assange in order to help the Trump campaign and discredit Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

He said he hadn't spoken to either ex-minister "in a while" but looks forward to doing so. It has about 9,000 employees in Canada and more than 50,000 worldwide.

Jackson's sentence will mark the end of a two-year legal battle between Manafort, a veteran Republican political operative who worked for Trump's campaign for five months in 2016, and Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who made exposing Manafort's covert lobbying for pro-Kremlin politicians in Ukraine a centrepiece of his Russian Federation probe.

"He has not learned a harsh lesson", Weissmann said.

"I have not even given it a thought", he added, when asked about a potential pardon. But he reached Mueller's team, and pled guilty to two counts of conspiracy.

"Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani also said prosecutors "should be ashamed of their horrendous treatment of Paul Manafort" following the sentencing last week".

At trial in Virginia in August, a jury found him guilty on eight counts and deadlocked on 10 others.

Manafort and his attorneys argued that he hadn't knowingly engaged in a pattern of deception with the prosecutors in the case and that his cooperation agreement should stay in force - that he should get credit for his plea and for the information he had given the government. He has apparently been giving prosecutors a great deal of information about various investigations into Trump world and has not yet been sentenced.
