49ers acquire Pro Bowl pass rusher Dee Ford in trade with Chiefs

Trading Dee Ford shows Chiefs are willing to lose a marquee player for a better fit

After trading a 2020 second-round NFL Draft pick to the Kansas City Chiefs, the San Francisco 49ers finally have a competent pass-rusher.

The 49ers will sign Ford to an extension worth $87.5 million over five years.

Ford, 28, was amenable to playing 2019 on the franchise tag, but Kansas City is shifting away from the 3-4 defensive scheme it used under former defensive coordinator Bob Sutton, who was sacked at the end of the season after leading the NFL's 31st-ranked defense. During the 2018 season, coach Kyle Shanahan compared the importance of an edge rusher to the defense to that of a quarterback on offense.

The 49ers are adding to their defensive arsenal with the reported trade for Chiefs franchise player, Dee Ford as trade season in the National Football League continues to deliver eye-popping headlines.

If the 49ers end up in this position, drafting Williams now is less concerning, since the team now has a player who can rush the passer from the edge.

The 49ers were reportedly one of two teams interested in Ford, according to an earlier report by Rapoport.

Linebacker Dee Ford is expected to be traded to the San Francisco 49ers, multiple reports say. He amassed 10.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for a loss during his senior year. His best year was the 2018 season, when he recorded 55 tackles and 13 sacks.

In return, Kansas City will receive a second-round pick, according to The MMQB. After the Chiefs moved to a 4-3 scheme heading into the 2019 season, Ford was always a likely trade candidate. The key will be allowing him to pin his ears back and use his speed off the edge, complementing Buckner and the team's incoming draft pick on the other side.
