Amazon ditches NY headquarters

Amazon cancels plans to open headquarters in New York citing opposition from local politicians

The new headquarters was initially framed by top NY politicians including Governor Andrew Cuomo as a tremendous job creation opportunity that could benefit the broader NY region.

Amazon suggested in their release that both Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio, and their staffs, "supported [Amazon] during the process" and "enthusiastically and graciously invited us to build in New York City". "They should be held accountable for this lost economic opportunity".

But local opposition was fervent from the beginning. There were also concerns that an influx of new, highly paid workers might have pushed out existing residents and added to congestion on the already-overcrowded subway.

Amazon said it was disappointed to have reached the decision and declared that it loves NY with its "incomparable dynamism, people and culture".

Other New York officials have praised the company's decision to not move to the city, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D).

Its job growth represented 3 percent of North Texas' overall gains during those years and 35 percent of the job gains in the advanced logistics industry, Amazon said. That high-level deal-making ignored the people on the ground, critics noted, and ignored the fact that Amazon is one of the wealthiest companies on the planet.

Yep, royal tots typically tote a lengthy list of godmothers and godfathers , and Meghan and Harry's baby will surely follow suit . She had been under intense media scrutiny for several years after the breakdown of her marriage to Prince Charles.

City and state leaders had agreed to provide about $3bn (£2.3bn) in incentives to secure that investment.

And there are plenty of others that do.

"We will continue to hire and grow across our 17 corporate offices and tech hubs in the USA and Canada", says Amazon in a statement. High-level executives with several Amazon teams were notified within the past few weeks that they would have to relocate to NY, which caused unrest, according to two people familiar with the matter. Last week he chided some of his fellow NY lawmakers for opposing Amazon HQ2 because, he insisted, they needed the company. But it wasn't a ploy, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Still, supporters including New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said that HQ2 would bring the region significant benefits, including economic diversity.

"This whole process shows why Amazon would have been a bad partner for NY".

'We are disappointed to have reached this conclusion - we love NY, ' the company said in a statement on Thursday.

'10 gunshots' fired as rapper Rich the Kid targeted in armed robbery
According to TMZ , multiples shots, as many as 10, were fired during the incident at Westlake Recording Studio . Members of his team were also attacked and a bodyguard was pistol whipped when it occurred.

"The district is now going to lose thousands of jobs that would have come there", a reporter quietly noted in the middle of Ocasio-Cortez's celebratory dance.

"You have to be tough to make it in New York City. All due to ignorance and small mindedness", wrote one.

"Oh, we are just beginning! Now let's get a Congressional hearing on Amazon, labor, ICE, monopsony, how and why to break up Amazon", Teachout tweeted Thursday. "We have the best talent in the world and every day we are growing a stronger and fairer economy for everyone". Instead, it will continue working with Tennessee and Virginia, which were part of the initial announcement.

But Amazon had originally planned to hire 25,000 employees for its second headquarters and revitalize the area in which the facility would be located. A group from Tucson offered to send a 21-foot-tall cactus to Seattle. There was also a call for an environmental study to be done on what the effects of having Amazon and its new headquarters would have on the city. Beyond hype, cities dangled generous tax incentives.

This is a breaking news story.

In his own statement, de Blasio was somewhat less gracious.
