Amazon's HQ2 NYC: Amazon reconsiders headquarters after local opposition, report says

New York Is Having Second Thoughts About Amazon’s Second Headquarters

NY state is not expected to give Amazon's plan final approval until 2020. Each city was expected to have more than 25,000 workers over time.

While Virginia officials have already approved Amazon's subsidy package, things have not gone as smoothly in NY.

The New York Democrat, who represents the 14th Congressional District, has been a fierce critic of the e-commerce giant's proposed second headquarters in Long Island City, a neighborhood in Queens. At issue is the election of New York State Sen. "As far as they say to us, everything is great, they're excited about NY, they're working hard to get to know the community and move things along". The company is hiring lobbyists and a "community affairs manager" in NY, so it's clearly still committed to the deal at some level.

Critics also say the project would drive up rent and tax New York's already troubled transit system.

Critics of the Long Island City proposal sent fresh salvos on Friday. Now he has been recommended to serve on the Public Authorities Control Board, which has veto power over a $500 million construction grant that was part of the construction deal with Amazon. It's had some success in the past blocking major projects.

Spurrier returns to sideline, wins AAF opener
What's more, the AAF uses a recruitment model created to attract players to their teams who are already popular in home markets. There were not many stand up out of your seat moments, but there is definitely potential for them as the season moves forward.

One reason for the big difference in whether Amazon is welcomed or not lies in the nature of the locations where the new headquarters would be.

State Assemblyman Ron Kim, center, as he speaks at a rally opposing New York's deal with Amazon, on the steps of New York's City Hall, on December 12, 2018. The two cities were the winners of a national competition that pitted American cities against each other to woo the retailer and its promise of thousands of high-paying jobs.

"If Amazon does not come to NY, it's because of the political opposition". We won't bore our readers by citing stats such as the business climate, the ease of flying to and from Dallas or the fact that Amazon doesn't really have to worry about finding the workforce it needs in a city it selects.

Soon after the Post report was published an article published by The New York Times said the Post report had "gone too far and Amazon had no plans to back out".

"We need Amazon", the governor said.

One of the people reportedly questioned "whether it's worth it if the politicians in NY don't want the project", according to the Post.

Protestors unfurl anti-Amazon banners during a New York City Council Finance Committee hearing on January 30.

"A lot of euphoric offers have come in for buyers that wanted to be in the area", said Adelaide Polsinelli, a broker at New York City-based Compass. After the announcement for HQ2, the so-called Everything Store plastered Queens with flyers about how great it is and why it would be a good addition to the neighborhood (Gianaris sent corresponding flyers telling Amazon to stick to Seattle). The company has also launched an aggressive mailer campaign to Queens residents "from your new neighbors at Amazon" to counter anti-Amazon flyers distributed by Gianaris. Amazon must decide soon, however, as it needs to start hiring the 25,000 employees for the Manhattan-adjacent campus if it wants to stick with its scheduled timeline.

If the deal does fall through, some fear it could have broader repercussions on New York's ability to attract top corporations.

Woody Allen sues Amazon for $68m for breach of contract
In 2014, adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow wrote a New York Times essay accusing Allen of sexually abusing her as a minor. The suit claims Amazon did not have a right to back out of the deal and is seeking $68 million in damages.
