Woman dies after getting trapped inside Toronto clothing donation bin

A woman has died after being trapped inside a clothes donation box.

Local authorities were called around 1:30 am to the Dovercourt Road and Bloor Street area after receiving reports that a woman was inside a clothing donation bin.

Paramedics performed CPR but she was pronounced dead at the scene, Toronto EMS said.

According to police, a coroner on scene reported the woman's death as "non-criminal and non-suspicious" and that this is an isolated incident.

In addition to the five deaths in B.C, a 32-year-old man was discovered dead inside a donation box in Cambridge, Ont., last November and a man in his 20s died in a similar container in Calgary in July 2017.

The City of Vancouver says most bins have already been removed in that municipality, and West Vancouver has sealed off all bins since the death of a man on New Year's Eve.

The hatches on the bins are created to keep thieves out, but they can also trap people climbing inside.

Diabetes Canada announced the move last week and said Tuesday that about 4,000 bins are being retrofitted or modified across the country, with the changes expected to be completed by January 18.

"I think if we look at these broad questions, focusing now first and foremost on safety but then looking again at the whole question of whether this system still works and whether these boxes are properly located, it will give us a kind of thorough examination of this", he said.

"There could be a million things that pose risks to people who are homeless, who are really struggling", she said.

However, de Blasio believes it will ultimately save the city money by drastically reducing residents' trips to the emergency room. De Blasio said that when the program is fully implemented it will be the most comprehensive health care system in the country.

The death marks the second time in only eight days that a Canadian has died while apparently trying to remove items from a clothing-donation bin. "Obviously, there's a goal for them in society", he said.

'Shut them all down, ' Loretta Sundstrom, whose daughter after getting stuck in a bin, told CBC last week.

"They are set up in a way to make it hard for people to have access to the inside of the box but obviously (they are) not safe enough".

The engineering professor said thousands of people, including those who try to get inside of the bins, depend on the donations collected there. They will also be removing "anti-theft capabilities" from future models.

In the wake of the recent bin deaths, however, the company has suspended manufacturing until it can conceive of a safer design.
