Donald Trump warns California he'll cut FEMA funding for wildfire recovery

Trump turns up the heat on Pelosi, says he is cutting off funds for CA wildfires

In a Wednesday morning tweet, Trump complained that "billions of dollars" are sent to California to combat forest fires, but claimed that with "proper Forest Management (sic)" the fires would "never happen".

The tweet states that the president has ordered FEMA to stop sending money "unless they get their act together", which the president calls "unlikely". "It is a disgraceful situation in lives & money", he stated in his tweet.

November's fire in the northern California town of Paradise was the deadliest USA wildfire in a century, killing at least 85 people and destroying almost 14,000 homes.

California Democrats were quick to rebuke Trump, who previously suggested that the state could avoid deadly wildfires by raking the forest floors.

Trump's threat to withhold FEMA funds from recent wildfire survivors drew a swift rebuke from California Sen.

However, de Blasio believes it will ultimately save the city money by drastically reducing residents' trips to the emergency room. De Blasio said that when the program is fully implemented it will be the most comprehensive health care system in the country.

Fortune reached out to FEMA for comment Wednesday.

Governor Gavin Newsom said 167 people have been killed by fires and floods over that time.

"We are at a point where everybody's had enough and we need to, I think, make sure we are prepared more than ever for the next few months as we enter into the height of our fire season", Newsom said at a press conference with California's Office of Emergency Services officials.

California was devastated by a series of rapidly moving fires late past year.

The Camp Fire in California previous year was the costliest natural disaster anywhere in the world in 2018, with a total cost $16.5 billion, according to a report this week by the reinsurance company Munich RE. "I'm already taking action to modernize and manage our forests and emergency responses", Gov. Newsom tweeted. The Woolsey fire in Los Angeles and Ventura counties left three dead and levelled about 1500 structures. The utility said it's doing all it can to reduce wildfire risks.

White House says tax refunds will go out on time
Later in the afternoon, Trump told reporters, "We're looking at a national emergency because we have a national emergency". Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House will send more bills to re-open government to the Senate this week.

"I don't think this is an incident that politics needs to play a part in and I'm very disappointed at anybody that would use this as a political pawn", he said. "We lost 13,000 structures".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked Republicans to condemn Trump and get him to reassure Californians needed assistance.

Newsom also pitched an additional $105 million to help California prevent and battle wildfires.

More than half of California's forests are managed by the federal government, and the letter noted the U.S. Forest Service's budget has steadily decreased since 2016.
