A auto plowed into crowds who were celebrating the passing of the New Year early on January 1 in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward, Japan, leaving a total of nine people injured.

Police said the man in custody is being held for 'questioning on suspicion of attempted murder'.

NHK footage showed a small box vehicle with a smashed front and paramedics carrying people on stretchers into ambulances.

Police arrested a man in his 20s, but they have not revealed any further details on the driver. Local media said a container with kerosene was found in the rental vehicle. Media reports added that he had initially planned to spread the kerosene around to start a fire, but had been unable to do so because of security restrictions.
