Hanover airport on lockdown after 'car drove through barrier on the runway'

At around 15:30 local time a male drove a auto through the perimeter fence at the airport serving the German city of Hannover.

A BMW vehicle with Polish license plates entered through a passageway onto the tarmac of the airport around 15:30 local time, prompting a major police response and deployment of explosive teams, reports Xinhua news agency. The vehicle was stopped by police, and the man driving the auto was detained after being "overwhelmed" by the police.

Federal police said the driver, who is in his mid-20s, tested positive for amphetamines and cocaine.

The incident came just over a week after German police announced they were tightening airport security over terrorism fears.
