A further 10 people were pulled from the rubble of a collapsed section, and 16 others, including seven children, were evacuated from nearby parts of the building without injuries. He was also shown donning a white coat and visiting a victim in hospital.

The regional governor, Boris Dubrovsky, who is at the site leading rescue operations, told reporters that 50 people might still be under the debris.

Officials said the blast ripped through the building at around 0600am local time when many residents were asleep.

At least three people are dead and dozens missing after an explosion in an apartment building in southern Russian Federation, state media reported.

Search and rescue teams are picking through the rubble of the partially-collapsed nine-storey building amid fears the death toll could grow.

They said some residents could have been buried under debris after Monday's accident.

The explosion shattered windows of nearby buildings, according to a local resident speaking on Echo of Moscow radio.

Russian President Vladimir Putin traveled to Magnitogorsk after being notified of the tragedy.

In 2015, at least five people were killed when a gas explosion damaged an apartment building in the southern city of Volgograd. He promised to quickly provide new apartments for those who were left homeless.

Russian emergency officials say that sections of the apartment building collapsed after an apparent gas explosion.

Such deadly gas explosions are relatively common in Russian Federation where much of the infrastructure dates back to the Soviet era and safety requirements are often ignored.
