Chief of staff Kelly: Trump backed away from wall months ago

Trump blames Dems for shutdown

Lindsey Graham of SC urged the White House and Democrats to consider supporting what he called a "breakthrough" compromise on immigration that would allow President Trump to secure his $5 billion demand for border security funds and also codify protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders. Lindsey Graham, who said he hoped to end the shutdown by offering Democrats incentives to get them to vote for wall funding.

"Either we build (finish) the Wall or we close the Border", Trump - who has adopted the 2020 re-election mantra "promises made, promises kept" - posted as recently as Friday.

He added that Democrats had previously rejected the deal and President Donald Trump "is not going to walk away from this fight" without funding for border security, adding he was "not asking anybody to do something new" but rather "rearrange the deal that was offered before".

Kellyanne Conway paid a visit to "Fox News Sunday" to weigh in publicly about the government shutdown, which entered its ninth day on Sunday.

Three dead in Libya's foreign ministry attack in Tripoli
The three attackers were suspected to be Islamic State militants, the security source, who requested not to be named, said. At least three members of staff were killed and 21 others were wounded, health ministry spokesman Wedad Abo Al Niran said.

Graham met with the president at the White House on Sunday.

"The president still says "wall" - oftentimes frankly he'll say "barrier" or 'fencing, ' now he's tended toward steel slats", Kelly said. "They're being promised something that people can simply not deliver upon", she said. "While one White House official says they're willing to compromise, another says the president is holding firm at no less than (US)$5 billion for the wall".

Both in the House and Senate Democrats appeared defiant and have said they will not back down from their rejection of a border wall.

The House and Senate gaveled in and out of session in under five minutes on Thursday.

"One of the reasons why it's so difficult to keep people from coming - obviously it'd be preferable for them to stay in their own homeland but it's difficult to do sometimes, where they live - is a insane, oftentimes conflicting series of loopholes in the law in the United States that makes it extremely hard to turn people around and send them home", Kelly said. Mr Trump claimed the deaths were "strictly the fault of the Democrats and their pathetic immigration policies that allow people to make the long trek thinking they can enter our country illegally". He also said the compromise should include changes in federal law to discourage people from trying to enter the USA illegally. "Now we have to do it the hard way, with a Shutdown".

And one thing Solskjaer won't struggle to do when they next meet is fire up his players, with the interim boss more than aware of the club's rival.

But Trump has continued to refer to his planned border structure as the "Wall".

Mr Trump has remained out of the public eye since returning to the White House early Thursday from a 29-hour visit to United States troops in Iraq, instead taking to Twitter to attack Democrats. Kelly denies he was ever asked to do anything illegal, but says he always made sure Trump had access to numerous points of view before making a decision. Now Democratic leaders are adamant that they will not authorize money for the project, calling it wasteful and ineffective.

Pelosi has vowed to pass legislation to reopen the nine shuttered departments and dozens of agencies now hit by the partial shutdown as soon as she takes the gavel.

Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi, said she had returned from Hawaii to her home in San Francisco late last week and plans to return to Washington on Monday as she prepares to be sworn in for her 17th term and lead the new House Democratic majority. "I'm surprised that the Democrats are this lax on the wall".

Their main role is to support the Baghdad regime's forces in their continuing fight to remove Islamic State from the country. Trump criticized his predecessor, Obama, for withdrawing troops too quickly from Iraq, claiming it allowed for ISIS' rise.
