Absolutely Fabulous star June Whitfield dies aged 93

Dame June Whitfield, a longtime fixture of British television best known today for her role in Absolutely Fabulous, died on Friday at the age of 93.

Another one of June's most popular roles was when she appeared in long-running soapie, EastEnders as Sister Ruth.

Instead, she appeared in more than 1,300 episodes of radio and television shows in her seven-decade career.

Fellow TV comic actor David Walliams also offered his appreciation for the talents of Dame June, calling her achievements in entertainment "brilliant".

Her most famous partnership was, of course, with Terry Scott - teaming up with him first in his sketch show, then playing his wife first in Happy Ever After, then in Terry And June, quintessential cosy suburban sitcoms that ran for 13 years between them.

She also appeared in Carry On films and featured in the United States sitcom Friends.

She was a regular on BBC radio and played a character in Last of the Summer Wine.

Dame June was awarded an OBE in 1985, a CBE in 2000 and, in 2017 she became a dame.

He wrote: "June Whitfield's incredible career in British comedy stretched all the way from "Hancock's Half Hour" to "Absolutely Fabulous".

Dame June worked in TV and radio for six decades, including Terry and June.

Tributes have been pouring in for the veteran actress since the sad news of her death was announced. She led the way for female comedy and we owe her enormous respect.
