Markets Right Now Another steep drop pulls Dow down 500

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 82.66 points, or 0.35 percent, to 23,675.64, the S&P 500 gained 0.22 point, or 0.01 percent, to 2,546.16 and the Nasdaq Composite added 30.18 points, or 0.45 percent, to 6,783.91.

The Dow for last week was down 1.18 percent, the S&P down 1.26 and the Nasdaq down 0.84 percent.

On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump and his top trade adviser stepped up their criticism of the central bank's monetary tightening, raising investor anxiety.

US stocks were boosted by upbeat earnings and tech companies. The Stoxx 600 lost 0.6% before 9 a.m. local time, closing in on two-year lows and is down 12% so far this year.

In addition to the looming government shutdown threat, investors prepared for the outcome of the two-day meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, which began on Tuesday. The Russell 2000, an index of smaller companies, has dropped more than 20 percent since the end of August, meaning that index is now in what Wall Street calls a "bear market".
