US Marine aircraft suffer 'mishap' off Japanese coast, search-and-rescue underway

Search and rescue operations are underway.

Search and rescue efforts were under way off Japan after two US Marine Corps aircraft crashed in a still-unexplained mishap, leaving seven US military personnel missing, US officials said.

The planes involved are a KC-130 and an F/A 18, carrying a total of seven personnel, United States media quoted officials as saying.

The Maritime Self-Defense Force, which dispatched aircraft and vessels to join the rescue operation, said Japanese rescuers found one of the crew members in stable condition.

The Marine Corps tweeted that the incident occurred at about 02:00 on Thursday (17:00 GMT Wednesday).

ABC News reported that a total of seven people were thought to be on the two aircraft.
