MPs vote for Dominic Grieve's Brexit amendment

The result of the Shropshire Star's Brexit poll

That's as nothing to the tears in No. 10 as they contemplate another attempt by opposition parties and dissident Tory MPs to take back control from the government if the Prime Minister's deal is defeated in the vote planned for Tuesday next week.

Commons leader Andrea Leadsom confirmed the u-turn over the legal advice after MPs decided her ministers were in "contempt" of Parliament.

May refused to publish on the basis that such "candid" legal advice given to ministers should be understood to be confidential.

The debates and final vote on December 11 will determine how, and possibly even if, Britain leaves the European Union as planned on March 29, in the country's biggest shift in foreign and trade policy in more than 40 years.

The government is facing a vote today over whether it is in contempt of Parliament by refusing to publish its own Brexit legal advice.

"It is, I think unprecedented for this House to find government ministers in contempt".

Qualcomm rules out another bid for NXP
Qualcomm moved ahead with a stock buyback of about $30 billion that it had promised shareholders should the NXP deal fall apart. The Trump administration had unsuccessfully lobbied the Chinese government earlier this year to give its blessing to the deal.

Labour, the Northern Irish DUP, SNP and Lib Dems, the Greens and Plaid Cymru had triggered the "contempt" action after Attorney General Geoffrey Cox failed to comply with MPs' demands.

In another sign of the government's weakness, lawmakers also passed an amendment giving Parliament more say over the government's next steps if the divorce deal is rejected in a vote on December 11.

It comes after one of the EU's top law officers, the advocate general Manuel Campos Sanchez-Bordona, stated on Tuesday his advice to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) that the United Kingdom could unilaterally stop Brexit by revoking Article 50.

Earlier in the day, the British government was dealt another blow when a top European Union legal adviser ruled that the United Kingdom could unilaterally halt the Brexit process.

May says if lawmakers do not back her deal, they could open the door to Britain falling out of the European Union without measures to soften the transition, or that Brexit might not happen.

A small number of Labour rebels could support her, but the party's official position is to vote against the deal.

Petrol prices in India slide further as crude gets into $50 range
Saudi Arabia benefits by drilling the cheapest oil in the world because of low capital spending and absence of gross tax on oil. After reaching a four-year high in early October, crude has collapsed more than 30 percent , marking the worst crash since 2015.

She will tell MPs: "The British people want us to get on with a deal that honours the referendum and allows us to come together again as a country, whichever way we voted. That is the nature of a negotiation", she said.

The Conservative prime minister has consistently refused to say what she plans to do if - as widely predicted - the British Parliament rejects the deal her government reached with the EU. Backers of the Norway-style approach have similar plans to hang back for now and step forward with an enticing amendment later in the process.

"This is the deal that delivers for the British people".

With just seven days left to try to turn the overwhelming opposition for her Brexit deal around, the prime minister deployed her attorney general - an ardent Eurosceptic - to the dispatch box to try to sell her deal.

"This is a huge win for us, and a huge step forward from the highest court in the business, and confirms what we have been hoping for: that the United Kingdom can indeed change its mind on Brexit and revoke Article 50, unilaterally", he said.
