Twenty-time Grand Slam victor Roger Federer recovered from his opening-day defeat by recording an easy win over Dominic Thiem on Tuesday at the ATP Finals.

Over the course of 67 minutes at The O2 arena, Thiem racked up 34 unforced errors in a 6-2, 6-3 defeat.

The 6th time ATP Finals champions will face Kevin Anderson of South Africa on Thursday in the final match of group B to keep his hopes alive of advancing to the semifinals of the tournament.

The 37-year-old's proud record of always reaching the semi-finals at the season-ender since it moved to London in 2009 looked in peril after a surprise loss to Kei Nishikori in his opening round-robin match on Sunday.

Roger Federer has hit back at claims he gets "preferential treatment" from tennis tournaments due to his status as one of the sport's all-time greats.

"Today I was more positive, more happy on the court and I reminded myself what a privilege it is to play here at the O2".

The inspired 32-year-old won the first 11 games but was denied only the second "double bagel" in the event's 48-year history after Federer's 2005 rout of Argentina's Gaston Gaudio.

Due to concerns over poor field conditions, the league has opted to relocate the game to Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This week the Chiefs were able to defeat the Arizona Cardinals, a team that has struggled through most of this season.

The Austrian's forehand gifted Federer a break for a 2-1 lead and then his volley came up short to help the Swiss star extend that advantage to 5-2.

Anderson was brimming with confidence, being nearly untouchable on serve and made some powerful returns followed by loads of pulsating groundstroke to steamroll the Japanese No. 1, serving him a nice bagel and taking the opening set 6-0.

Federer snagged his first service break in the third game of the match and never looked back.

"I felt I did a fantastic job throughout really".

"I could win and still not make it, so from that standpoint it's not in my power", Federer said of his clash with Anderson who he lost to in an epic Wimbledon quarter-final this year.
