Khashoggi case: US Defence Secretary calls for transparent investigations

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron are seen at a news conference after a Syria summit in Istanbul Turkey

Members of Oklahoma's congressional delegation are taking a wait-and-see approach to Saudi Arabia following the death of American resident Jamal Khashoggi, and they say it's too soon to rethink a $110 billion arms deal between the United States and the Middle East country.

"Unfortunately, there has been this hysteria in the media before the investigation was complete", he said during a panel at the Manama Dialogue, which was organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Manama, the capital of Bahrain.

Khashoggi, 59, entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to obtain paperwork necessary for his upcoming marriage to Ms Cengiz, a Turkish national. Meanwhile, US Defence Secretary James Mattis said Khashoggi's murder "undermines regional stability" and that the US intends to take further action in response.

Khashoggi, a onetime Saudi insider and US resident who lived in self-imposed exile for nearly a year before his death, had written critically of the crown prince in columns for the Washington Post.

Saudi Arabia initially denied any involvement in Mr. Khashoggi's disappearance but a Saudi official eventually attributed his death to a botched attempt to return him to the kingdom.

Erdogan said on Saturday the extradition request was being relayed to Saudi Arabia. The foreign minister also did not directly respond to questions about how the kingdom would persuade its allies that Crown Prince Mohammed had no ties to the killing.

Mr Mojeb, who last week acknowledged that the killing was "premeditated" based on Turkish evidence, arrived in Istanbul this morning and is expected to inspect the Saudi consulate where Mr Khashoggi was killed.

The fiancée of Jamal Khashoggi on Monday criticized President Donald Trump's response to his killing, urging him to set aside USA trade interests in the push for truth, and demanded Riyadh disclose more details to bring those who ordered it to justice.

"When I asked him why he was anxious, he didn't really want to reply, but eventually he told me he was getting proof that Saudi Arabia had used chemical weapons". Saudi officials, however, continue to characterize the killing as a rogue operation carried out by agents who exceeded their authority.

The Saudi government has repeatedly changed its story about what happened to Khashoggi, first claiming he left the consulate and later claiming he was accidentally killed.

The meeting between the Saudi prosecutor and the Istanbul chief prosecutor lasted for 75 minutes.

When asked why MI6 did not alert its intelligence partner the USA, the source said "a decision was taken that we'd done what we could".

She added, "President Trump should not pave the way for a coverup".

"No foreign leader who is not enslaved to Saudi Arabia financially would dare to be seen standing next to him", Whitson said. "I don't want to just trust the Turks or the Saudis". "The world should know who instigated, were involved in and committed this crime".

The Saudi minister vowed that the government will bring those responsible for the murder to justice.
