Trump Adviser Tells Putin: We'll Quit Arms Control Treaty You're Breaking

Bolton meets with Moscow after Trump threatens to exit landmark nuclear weapons treaty

On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to the news of an impending usa pullout: "If the United States does withdraw from the INF treaty, the main question is what they will do with these newly available missiles".

Experts and analysts warned that the world will enter a unsafe situation as US President Donald Trump said that the United States is ready to build up its nuclear arsenal after announcing it is abandoning a Cold War-era nuclear treaty, triggering a warning of retaliatory measures from Moscow.

The two-party INF pact, signed by the United States and the Soviet Union in 1987, bans all nuclear and non-nuclear missiles with short and medium ranges, with the exception of sea-launched weapons.

Withdrawing from a cold war-era nuclear weapons pact with Russian Federation would mean the United States could deploy intermediate ground-based missile systems in Asia to counter China, military experts say.

Russian Federation has the option of deploying intermediate-range missiles in its European exclave of Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea, a move that would put a swath of Europe in range.

"In all honesty, we are puzzled to see the United States' unprovoked moves that are hard to call friendly", Putin said.

Putin has charged it was the United States that violated pact with missile defense facilities in Romania that could be used to hold cruise missiles in violation of the INF. "Yes, we will and this will be very quick and effective".

Signed by the USA and the USSR in 1987, the INF treaty bans all nuclear and non-nuclear missiles with short and medium ranges, except sea-launched weapons.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shogun, who met Bolton on Tuesday, said Russia and the U.S. should jointly address strategic issues of nuclear deterrence and regulate major longstanding conflicts.

"NATO's military activities near our borders have reached the highest level since the Cold War times", Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said, noting that the war games will be "simulating offensive military action".

National Security Adviser John Bolton confirmed the plan Tuesday in Moscow, not long after speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin in person about the decision. Those comments caused widespread consternation and rebukes from the US intelligence community, which has concluded that Russian Federation did intervene to boost Trump's candidacy.

At a rally in Nevada on Saturday, Trump said: "Russia has violated the agreement". "The world doesn't need a new arms race".

The INF has been hailed as a cornerstone of nonproliferation from the Cold War, helping eliminate more than 2,000 ground-based Soviet and United States missiles on the European continent.

Help us grow and continue telling Israel's story to the world. "However, the dismantlement of this treaty without proposing anything new is obviously not what we would welcome".

Growing tensions over the nuclear treaty overshadowed a news conference originally scheduled to give details of Nato's Trident Juncture military exercise in Norway, its largest since the end of the Cold War.

In Berlin, Germany's foreign minister urged his Russian counterpart to do everything possible to preserve the treaty.

He said Russian Federation had first illegally tested a land-based cruise missile in 2008 and described its violations of the treaty as "long and deep".

But he said he did not think this would lead to reciprocal deployment of USA missiles in Europe as happened in the 1980s.
