'Halloween' opening weekend breaks box office records

‘Halloween’ scares up $77.5 million in ticket sales

Serving as a direct sequel to John Carpenter's original 1978 Halloween, the new film ignores the nine other sequels and remakes and picks up 40 years later, with Jamie Lee Curtis's battle-scarred heroine Laurie Strode preparing for her inevitable rematch with masked killer Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney).

Curtis took to Twitter on Sunday to celebrate the massive success of the fright flick, which earned an estimated $77.5 million in ticket sales from North American theaters over the weekend, according to Universal Pictures.

Directed by David Gordon Green from a script co-written by himself, Jeff Fradley and Danny McBride, the film stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Virginia Gardner, Miles Robbins, Dylan Arnold, Drew Scheid, and Nick Castle.

Halloween is slaying its box office competition. The strategy to open it at the Toronto Film Festival and premiere it in America during Fantastic Fest probably helped, too, but make no mistake: Jamie Lee Curtis was a huge selling point, right along with the October release date. The weekend was up almost 72 percent from the same weekend last October and the year to date is up almost 11 percent. And is the highest grossing horror movie with a female lead. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
