Central American Caravan Crosses into Mexico as Trump Threats Mount

Trump Vows to 'Turn Away' 7,000-strong Migrant Caravan

The press offices of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray on Monday declined to comment on the progress of the caravan or Mexican efforts to halt it. Pena Nieto's office referred to a statement from the Foreign Ministry on Friday that Mexican authorities will deal with the situation on the Guatemala border with respect for human rights.

Some have questioned the timing so close to the vote and whether some political force was behind it, though by all appearances it began as a group of 160 who chose to band together in Honduras for protection and snowballed as the group moved north.

After blaming the Democrats for "weak laws" on immigration a few days earlier, Trump said via Twitter: "The Caravans are a disgrace to the Democrat party".

Trump's "unknown Middle Easterners" likely refers to Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales' claim last week that his country has apprehended and deported "close to 100 people" linked to the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorist group, and more than 1,000 MS-13 gang members, as the caravan crossed Guatemala.

He also added that his government would begin cutting aid to the migrants' home countries in retaliation.

As many as an estimated 10,000 people are migrating from Central America, through Mexico, and toward the United States, and Trump has pledged to "stop the onslaught".

I'll be here for the next few hours for all the build-up, live updates and reaction from the 2018 US Grand Prix . Vettel finished the wet practice session in fifth place, almost two full seconds off Hamilton's fastest time.

With the migrants now well into Mexico, Trump blasted the governments of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala for allowing the caravan to get this far in the first place. "But I will seal off the border before they come into this country". Organizers plan for them to begin moving north, reaching the northern city of Huixtla, which is about 20 miles north, and resting there.

"We are going to the promised land", Garcia said, motioning to his fellow travellers.

What's next: A caravan leader, David Lopez, says the group will likely remain in Tapachula for a few days as members decide whether to continue the march to the U.S. border, per the Wall Street Journal.

"We give them tremendous amounts of money, you know what it is, you cover it all the time".

It was clear Monday, though, that for now it was still growing as migrants rushed to catch up overnight.

After flying with Trump to Orlando on Air Force One last week, he told lawmakers he could not come in, infuriating members.

"There are more sick people". The numbers for 2017 show that the USA has given Honduras at least $144 million, and that number will likely rise as final reports are compiled.

Ana Luisa España, a laundress from Chiquimula, Guatemala, joined the caravan as she saw it pass through her country.

"The president wants to make sure we're doing everything we can to secure and protect our borders and that's exactly what he's been talking about", she said. "We would do anything, except bad things".

Of the three countries, President Trump has vowed to cut aid since they failed in keeping their citizens from fleeing to the United States.

"We do have an obligation as a country under global law to allow people to apply for protection, even if they have come through another country", Meissner tells TIME.
