Armed looters targeting homes and businesses in county ravaged by Hurricane Michael

Hurricane Michael: Death Toll Rises To 18; More Than 1,000 Still Reported Missing

President Donald Trump marveled at the roofless homes and uprooted trees he saw Monday while touring Florida Panhandle communities ravaged by the force of Hurricane Michael.

Five days after the hurricane slammed into the Florida Panhandle, people are struggling to locate friends and loved ones who haven't been heard from, though how many residents are missing seems to be anyone's guess.

"While the FCC has been in regular contact with companies serving the affected areas, I'm concerned that their actions on the ground aren't matching the urgency that we have conveyed during those conversations", Pai added. But Pai wants more. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai on Tuesday called for wireless carriers to waive bills for customers affected by the storm. In addition, I have directed our Public Safety & Homeland Security Bureau to promptly initiate an investigation into this matter.

In some areas of the county, spray-painted signs warn "Looters will be shot" and "You steal, we kill".

More than 150,000 people were still without power in the US Southeast, with residents of battered coastal towns such as Port St Joe, Florida forced to cook on fires and barbecue grills.

Cologne: Hostage Taken, Shots Fired at German Railway Station
A police spokesperson told NBC News that "one woman has been taken hostage" but could not confirm if shots had been fired. A man has suffered life-threatening injuries after holding a woman hostage in the German city of Cologne.

AT&T told Ars that its pre-storm preparations allowed it to "keep our customers, including first responders, connected during and after the storm in many areas".

Last month, President Donald Trump tweeted that "3,000 people did not die" in the hurricanes that hit the island previous year. "We won't rest until service is completely restored".

"Beginning on October 10 credits have been given to customers in Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gulf, Liberty, Taylor and Wakulla counties".

All four major US carriers offer bill credits, free service, or waived overage fees to customers in affected areas.

He noted on "America's News HQ" that thousands of crews in the area have been working to restore power and communications, "so that people can connect their family, and they can begin the recovery process". The outage rate was highest in Bay County, where 61.5 percent of cell sites (201 out of 327) were out. Across Bay County, more than 2,500 structures are damaged, and at least 162 have been destroyed, Bay County Emergency Services said.

The Funeral Home Closed in April. A Letter Led to a Search
Investigators found bodies not stored properly, including at least least two that reportedly appeared to be covered in mold. A cadaver dog from Michigan State Police checked the rest of the building and did not find any more remains, police said.

Most of the missing are said to be in Panama City and are elderly, disabled or live alone, co-founder of Houston-based CrowdSource Rescue Matthew Marchetti told the Reuters news agency. "Crews continue their fiber fix work throughout the day today".

The Associated Press' tally also includes 10 deaths in Virginia, Georgia and North Carolina. He said that, in Bay County, the medical examiner's office had no electricity as of Monday afternoon and was relying on a generator. "We went above and beyond code, and we asked the question: 'What would survive the big one?' And we consistently tried to build it for that".

Cathey had a one-word exclamation when his Verizon phone started working for the first time in almost a week: "Hallelujah!"

Finally, Sprint said that, from October 10 to October 18, the operator would waive call, text and data overage fees, and that it continued to work to restore services. "Those customers who are already on Unlimited plans, they will continue to have their unlimited call, text and data benefits". AT&T is providing network updates at this page.
