Police said the incident started Monday at 12:45 p.m. (1045 GMT).

German police say they've freed a woman who had been taken hostage in Cologne's main train station and have her captor in custody. "Police measures are continuing", Cologne police wrote on Twitter just after 3pm after commandos had stormed the shop.

A man has suffered life-threatening injuries after holding a woman hostage in the German city of Cologne. Police said there was no immediate suspicion of a link to terrorism.

Before police stormed the pharmacy, the entire train station, one of the biggest in Germany, was evacuated and all train traffic was stopped, leading to delays and cancelations across western Germany.

Investigators found bodies not stored properly, including at least least two that reportedly appeared to be covered in mold. A cadaver dog from Michigan State Police checked the rest of the building and did not find any more remains, police said.

A police spokesperson told NBC News that "one woman has been taken hostage" but could not confirm if shots had been fired. The hostage was also slightly injured and treated on the scene.
