‘S Arabia allows consulate search over Khashoggi’

AP Analysis: Missing writer shows Saudi Arabia’s dark side

United Nations human rights experts called Tuesday for an investigation into the disappearance of Saudi journalist and government critic Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul.

The ambassador said the Istanbul consulate is fully cooperating with local authorities and that a Saudi team was sent to Istanbul to cooperate with their Turkish counterparts.

"We agree if there was any truth to the allegations of wrongdoing by the Saudi government it would be devastating to the US-Saudi relationship and there will be a heavy price to be paid - economically and otherwise". "This is a horrific escalation in the crown prince's campaign to silence dissent, to silence any criticism, even the mildest of criticism, from Saudis at home or overseas", says columnist for The Intercept Mehdi Hasan, who is also host of "UpFront" at Al Jazeera English, where he interviewed Khashoggi earlier this year.

Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post and critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, went missing one week ago after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

A Turkish government source has said that police believe the journalist was murdered, a claim denied by Riyadh. "Although my hope slowly fades away each passing day, I remain confident that Jamal is still alive".

The Turkish source said Turkish officials were trying to identify them.

Jimmy Butler verbally challenged team at practice
He can exercise his right to become a free agent after this season and command a deal that might be worth up to $190 million. Butler reportedly scrimmaged against the current starting unit with deep reserve players, and Butler's group dominated.

Amid growing calls within the US and around the world for Saudi Arabia to investigate Khashoggi's disappearance, Republican Sen. Saudi officials haven't acknowledged that. The prince emphasized Saudi Arabia is taking "extraordinary" measures to locate Khashoggi, "just as we would if it were any other Saudi citizen".

Saudi Arabia has denied the accusations, saying it is "working to search for him".

Jamal Khashoggi went to the consulate last Tuesday to obtain a document certifying he had divorced his ex-wife, so that he could marry his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.

Saudi prince Khalid bin Farhan al-Saud, who has fled to Germany after the empowerment of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, called on people to overthrow the current rulers in Riyadh after the recent murder of prominent journalist Jamal Khashoggi by the Al-e Saud.

He also said what happened to Khashoggi was a crime and those responsible for his disappearance must be tried, Al Jazeera said.

What's next: Erdogan's statement today suggests he is not keen on escalating tensions with Saudi Arabia - at least for now - and that Ankara is inclined to await the official outcome of the probe into Khashoggi's disappearance before making a decisive diplomatic move. The newspaper said the USA should demand answers from the Saudis.

Khashoggi, an Al Watan and Washington Post journalist known for his strong critiques of authorities in Saudi Arabia and ruling Prince Mohammed bin Salman, had fled his home country previous year to live in self-imposed exile in the United States.

In a meeting Sunday night with The Post's publisher, Fred Ryan, the ambassador said it was "impossible" that such a crime could be covered up by consulate employees "and we wouldn't know about it".

The fiancee of missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Tuesday asked President Donald Trump to help uncover what happened to the Riyadh critic who she said had "been fighting for his principles".

Global pressure is also ramping up on Saudi Arabia to cooperate with the probe. That's according to Turkey's state-owned news agency Anadolu. "I do not like it", Trump told reporters at the White House.

After several of his friends were arrested, his column was cancelled by the al-Hayat newspaper and he was allegedly warned to stop tweeting, Mr Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia for the United States, from where he wrote opinion pieces for the Washington Post and continued to appear on Arab and Western TV channels.
