Police Shooting South Carolina

Seven law enforcement officerswere shot in Florence, S. C., Wednesday evening, city police and sheriff's officials said.

Authorities have identified Hopkins as the suspect in the shootings of seven law enforcement officers in Florence Wednesday. Florence Police Officer Terrence Carraway died from his injuries. According to SCNow, a 27-year-old person in the home was also wounded.

Meanwhile, authorities said Friday that Wednesday's shootings would be investigated by the same special Federal Bureau of Investigation team that worked on the slayings of five police officers in Dallas in 2016 and last October's mass shooting in Las Vegas.

Hopkins was also charged with six other counts of attempted murder after injuring six other police officers.

Frederick Hopkins is a Vietnam veteran and a disbarred attorney.

Heidler spoke fondly and sorrowfully of Carraway a day after the sergeant was shot and killed during a two-hour standoff that began Wednesday afternoon when deputies tried to execute a search warrant.

Randy Sutton of Blue Lives Matter says a veteran sergeant, Terrence Caraway, was shot and killed getting out of his patrol vehicle. WPDE-TV reports Hopkins fell at the scene.

A South Carolina Supreme Court order dated June 22, 1982, ordered that Hopkins be disbarred over his failure to comply with an order to pay $18,000 in attorney fees that were allegedly wrongfully collected.

The suspect, Frederick Hopkins, 74, was hospitalized with a head injury, Florence County Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby said Thursday. Two other wounded officers were released the night of the shooting.

Boone said investigators from Richland County would help investigate the shooting.

The standoff was so risky that police had to use a bullet-proof vehicle to rescue the wounded.

A judge chose to wait for more information before granting the elder Hopkins, a disabled Vietnam veteran, a court-appointed attorney.

Heidler described Carraway as the "epitome of a community police officer" and a guy who "laughed all the time".

"Pray for the family who lost the bravest police officer that I have ever known", the Florence police chief said. "The selfless acts of bravery from the men and women in law enforcement is real, just like the power of prayer is real", Gov. Henry McMaster said on social media.

Bobby Goin stood outside waiting for police to let him back to his home where his wife and granddaughter heard gunshots from the home back further in the neighborhood.
