How Is Hurricane Florence Affecting You?

The National Hurricane Center issued a storm surge and hurricane watch for the east coast from Edisto Beach, South Carolina north towards the North Carolina-Virginia border.

The storm became a hurricane Sunday morning.

Florence is approximately 410 miles south of Bermuda and 975 miles east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, as of 5 a.m. ET, according to the NHC. A storm with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour classifies as a Category 3 major hurricane, according to the NHC.

According to the North Carolina Emergency Management agency on September 9, there is now an "increasing risk of life-threatening impacts: storm surge at coast, flooding inland ..."

The hurricane center warned that the swells are likely to cause "life-threatening" surf and current conditions.

National Hurricane Center says swells generated by Florence are affecting Bermuda and portions of the U.S. East Coast.

The governor of neighboring North Carolina also ordered an evacuation of the Outer Banks and parts of coastal Dare County while a state of emergency was declared in Virginia.

"We are not going to gamble with the lives of the people of South Carolina", McMaster said.

The storm's center will move between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday, and is expected to approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said. "Normally, a landfalling tropical cyclone just keeps on going inland, gradually dissipating and raining itself out".

The hurricane has been rapidly strengthening all morning.

"While our state is not under any current weather advisories, in Florida, we know how quickly a major storm can shift its path and we cannot leave preparedness up to chance".

Evacuations began Monday in coastal Carolina regions as landfall still looks likely near the state line between North Carolina and SC.

The US military said it was sending an advanced team to Raleigh, North Carolina, to coordinate with federal and state partners and that about 750 military personnel will be set aside to provide support. One out of every five South Carolinians, about 1 million in all, are in the evacuation zones covering eight counties.

Florence was expected to build into potentially catastrophic Category 5 hurricane today as it closed in on North and SC.

Not a lot of models have the storm veering away from the predicted course since meteorologists aren't seeing any factors like wind shear or weather fronts that would weaken or deflect the storm, Eck explained.

In an earlier update, officials said Florence's winds could reach 150 mph over the next 36 hours.

"We are expecting more wind that we had with Hugo and more water than we had with Matthew.", McMaster said. The University of North Carolina Wilmington announced it has canceled classes and issued a voluntary evacuation for students starting at noon today.

The United States faced a series of high-powered hurricanes previous year, including Hurricane Maria, which killed some 3,000 people in Puerto Rico, and Hurricane Harvey, which caused an estimated US$1.25 billion in damage when it brought catastrophic flooding to Houston. Heavy rain may impact as far inland as Charlotte, North Carolina's largest city, though the severity will depend on the storm's track, according to The Charlotte Observer.
