It was not clear what the officer may have said to 26-year-old Botham Jean after entering his home late Thursday. Jean was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Jean graduated in 2016 with a degree in accounting and management information systems from Harding University, where Bertram Jean said his son got the Arkansas school to send students to St. Lucia over the summer to do charity work.

Former classmates from Harding University told the ChristianChronicle.org that he was known for his deep faith and his attractive singing voice.

He was active in his faith community, Churches of Christ.

As the heavy thunderstorm receded on Friday night, a diverse group of people - ample media outlets in the wings - memorialized Jean at the vigil, organized by local activist group Mothers Against Police Brutality.

"Botham was in the prime of his life", his uncle said. "He was always friendly, always smiling and just all around a great person". How can this nasty world take you away from me?

Botham Jean is seen February 27, 2014.

At a Friday morning news conference, Sgt. Warren Mitchell acknowledged there are many questions about what happened that he couldn't answer.

Dallas Police officials have not said why the situation escalated to the shooting, and declined to comment on whether the officer thought Jean was an intruder.

"We have ceased handling (the incident) under our normal officer-involved shooting protocol", the chief said, adding that the officer's blood was being tested for drugs and alcohol.

The officer, whose name has not been released, will be charged with manslaughter, police said Friday, as reported by the Associated Press.

Jean worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas, an global company that does assurance, tax and advisory work for companies around the world.

"This is a bad tragedy", the professional services and auditing firm said via Twitter.

"Knowing Botham, I can just imagine him looking into the peephole, seeing the police officer and opening the door because he did no one wrong", his mother Allison Jean told NBC News. She couldn't even say where the woman was, or whether she was in custody.

Jessica Berry, the minister's daughter and a close friend of Jean's, told WFAA that Jean was scheduled to lead worship on Sunday.

Botham Jean, the son of Mrs. Allison Jean and Mr. Bertram Jean, was also the nephew of former national footballer Earl Jean and former parliamentarian Ignatius Jean.
