North Korea's Kim says wants to denuclearise in Trump's first term - Seoul

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Chinese President Xi Jinping make a toast at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing

Despite the strains since the Trump-Kim summit, high-level talks and visits have continued and there have been some gestures from the North like sending back the remains of some of the USA troops killed during the Korean War in the 1950s.

North Korea's Kim Jong-un vowed he wants to give up nuclear weapons by the end of Donald Trump's first term, offering a potential timeline for denuclearization, a top South Korean official said after visiting Pyongyang.

The third inter-Korean summit will take place in Pyongyang from September 18 to 20, Seoul's National Security Office chief Chung Eui-yong said Thursday.

Seoul says the leaders of the two Koreas will meet September 18-20 in Pyongyang to discuss how to achieve the "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

The trove of comments from Mr. Kim was filtered through his propaganda specialists in Pyongyang and the South Korean government, which is keen on keeping engagement alive.

The Russian space agency Roscosmos has convened a commission to conduct further analysis of the possible reason behind the leak. The station has been mostly a collaboration between USA and Russian crews during its decade and a half of continuous operation.

Mr Kim also asked the envoy to relay a message to the US, while voicing hopes to end their hostile ties before US President Donald Trump's term ends in January 2021.

"This trust, despite some difficulties surfaced during the negotiation process between the United States and the North, will continue", he said.

Trump is touting the kind words of a despot as his own West Wing is in a meltdown after an anonymous "senior official in the Trump administration" wrote a scandalous op-ed in the New York Times outlining a conspiracy within the administration to keep Trump from doing anything detrimental to the country.

Mr. Moon has made an end-of-war declaration an important premise of his peace agenda with North Korea.

However, US officials may put spanner in the works as they insisted that the peace accord can not be reached before North Korea provides all information on its nuclear program, allows global inspections and gives up a certain number of its projectiles during the early stages of the talks.

"He made that clear", Chung told reporters after meeting with Kim.

The North's Rodong Sinmun newspaper on Thursday said Washington must discard its "stubborn" stance that the North must denuclearize first before the United States agrees to a peace treaty.

Chung reported that Kim said he wishes for North Korea and the United States to put an end to their seven decades of hostile relations before the end of Trump's first term.

The milestone meeting resulted in an accord, sealed by Trump and Kim, in Singapore in June, but the talks between Pyongyang and Washington stalled as both sides disagreed on how to carry out the vaguely-worded agreement. Post-summit nuclear negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang were rocky and quickly settled into a stalemate.

"But the work of convincing Chairman Kim to make this strategic shift that we've talked about for a brighter future for the people of North Korea continues", Pompeo said.
