Kremlin says Syria army getting ready to 'solve' Idlib 'terrorism' problem

White House: Iran, Russia Gear Up for Mass Strike in Syria

On Tuesday, the White House released an official statement condemning the attacks on Idlib and threatened military force if "chemical weapons" are used.

The warning comes as the United Nations urged Russian Federation - a key supporter of Assad that has complained about militants in Idlib targeting its own facilities - and Turkey to help avert a "bloodbath" in the rebel-held province.

Global calls mounted on Wednesday to avoid a "massacre" by government forces in Syria's last rebel-held province of Idlib, two days before a summit among key powers backing the government and opposition.

Trump on Monday sent a tweet warning the Syrian government and its allies against a "reckless attack" on the rebel-held Idlib province.

The Syrian conflict has become increasingly complex since it grew out of anti-government protests in 2011, drawing in other major powers including Russian Federation and Turkey.

Trump on Wednesday said Idlib province is now "surrounded by a lot of people with a lot of weapons" and expressed concern about the 3 million civilians he said now live in Idlib.

The presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey meet Friday in Tehran for a summit expected to shape the future of Idlib province, home to Syria's last major rebel bastion.

"We know that the Syrian armed forces are getting ready to solve this problem", President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.

The Pentagon has seen "zero" evidence to suggest that opposition groups in Syria's Idlib province could use chemical weapons, US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday, despite Russian claims to the contrary.

At the time, Trump said the targeted airfield had launched the chemical attack on a rebel-held area.

Last month the Syrian air force also dropped leaflets over various towns urging residents to surrender to the regime as the war was nearing its end.

The President also denied ever ordering or considering ordering the assassination of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad when he was pressed Wednesday about the allegation, which is included in a new book by veteran journalist Bob Woodward.

"If it is a slaughter, the world will get very, very angry, and the United States will get very, very angry", he said.

"Let's fucking kill him! It's a work of fiction", Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, noting that Mattis and White House chief of staff John Kelly had both issued statements rejecting the book's account.
