Cuomo and Nixon spar in debate

Cynthia Nixon and Andrew Cuomo

"Yeah, as soon as you do", Cuomo said. While she has a history of advocating on behalf of progressive issues, the governor has enacted real change, he said.

That would square with the clip of then actress and activist Nixon praising Cuomo for the Women's Equality Act, which dates back to 2014.

Cuomo speaks at the Democratic gubernatorial primary debate with Cynthia Nixon at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York August 29, 2018.

Over the next hour, the governor surprised Nixon by going negative, ripping into his challenger as a phony who concealed her tax records (she has not) and would run the state into debt-driven chaos. In 2010, when he won his first term, Cuomo faced off against Republican nominee Carl Paladino at a circus-like debate that included the fringe candidates also on the ballot that year.

Identifying key factors of running the state such as fire management and the subway system Cuomo argued that the "main risk to the state of New York" is President Trump, and that the governor "need [s] to know how" to stand on the front lines.

The governor then said the fact is the subway system was owned by New York City.

She said Tuesday that she had yet to hear back from WCBS-TV regarding the room temperature.

At one point, moderator Marcia Kramer told Nixon her time was up.

"CBS was very frank with us that they really didn't have a choice - that these were his demands and if they were not acceded to, he wouldn't show up", said Nixon.

Happy streaming, and good luck to both candidates.

Asked why she was running and what in her background would give voters confident she could run the state, Nixon reminded the crowd that she is a life-long New Yorker and touted her activist background, organizing rallies and meeting with legislatures for public school funding, as well as working for a group that "laid the groundwork for marriage equality" in NY. He is attacking everything we believe in NY.
