Trump slams media as 'opposition party' while papers defend free press

Hundreds Of Newspapers Are Challenging Trump's Attacks: 'We Are Not The Enemy’

President Donald Trump is lashing out at the press as newspapers nationwide launch a coordinated rebuttal to his attacks against what he calls "fake news".

More than 350 news outlets heeded the Boston Globe's call to runs the editorials on Thursday to promote "press freedom in light of President Trump's frequent attacks on the media".

Trump tweeted that he supports a free press but much of what the United States press prints is "fake news".

Throughout his campaign and after he was elected, Trump has regularly derided the media, labelling them as "fake news" and calling them the "enemy of the people".

Joining the effort Tuesday, August 14, New York Times editorial page editor James Bennet said, "At a time when newspapers around the country are under real commercial and political pressure, we think it's important to show solidarity".

A month after taking the oath of office, Trump labelled the news media "the enemy of the American people". "Correcting them is core to our job", the editorial board wrote. The movement was initially pushed by the Boston Globe.

The Fayetteville Observer said it hopes Mr Trump will stop making such accusations, "but we're not holding our breath".

President Trump has repeatedly declared that the "fake news" media is the "enemy of the people". Rather, the paper claims its staff are pretty fond of "the people" and are instead enemies of "unchecked authority", "undeserved privilege", and "self-entitlement" to name a few.

Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer pointed out mainstream media's hypocrisy in coordinating anti-Trump editorials.

The Globe's editorial board made the appeal last week, urging newspaper editorial boards to produce opinion pieces about Trump's attacks on the media.

Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has been meeting with Mexican officials as the USA works to renegotiate NAFTA. Brent crude oil futures were at $71.11 per barrel at 0712 GMT, up 35 cents, or 0.5 percent, from their last close.

"Now the Globe is in COLLUSION with other papers on free press".

"Just as his lack of restraint has often been the president's self-inflicted wound, the bias of some of the press has hurt journalism, at the very moment when it is most needed to save itself", said the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Both the Chronicle and Baltimore Sun said that it plays into the hands of Trump and his supporters who think the media is out to get him.

Freeman wrote that the president has the right to free speech as much as his media adversaries.

"Trump's references to us as the "enemy of the American People" are no less risky because they happen to be strategic", the Kansas City Star wrote.

"For more than two centuries, this foundational American principle has protected journalists at home and served as a model for free nations overseas".
