U.S. denies any role in attempt at assassination

Video appears to show drone in alleged attack

The Venezuelan economy continued to collapse this week after the failed assassination attempt on socialist President Nicolas Maduro, with the exchange rate reaching levels so bad that just $1 can purchase over 900,000 gallons of gasoline.

Reverol said one of the detained had an outstanding arrest warrant for his alleged role in the August 2017 attack on a military base in Valencia.

Saab's announcement comes a day after Interior Minister Néstor Reverol said six people had been arrested in connection with Saturday's attack in the capital. Another was previously arrested during anti-government protests in 2014, he said. In this case, Maduro wasn't targeted by a lone gunman or any person at all - his "attacker" was a pair of explosive-carrying drones.

The munitions could cause damage in a radius of 50 meters, and intelligence services were able to identify the nearby streets that were used for launching the drones from a distance, he said.

One drone was thrown off course electronically by signal blockers, according to Nestor Reverol, the country's interior minister, who said that the second fell and hit an apartment building.

The incident took place as Maduro was speaking at a commemoration of the 81st anniversary of the Venezuelan national guard that featured a military parade.

Seven people were injured following what appeared to be drone-type flying devices detonating above mass crowds in the parade.

Later, Maduro called the attack as an assassination attempt, and blamed it on the far-right factions in Venezuela, the Colombian government and conspirators in the United States.

However, he asserted the "intellectual authors" and financiers behind the plan are resident in Florida.
