Temperatures in the shade of 47 degrees Celsius are forecast in parts of Extremadura and there is a chance Europe's highest ever temperature recorded - 48 degrees Celsius in Athens - could be broken.

114 people were killed in two massive forest blazes a year ago in Portugal and civil services yesterday sent mobile text alerts warning the population of an extreme risk of fires in some regions, including around the capital Lisbon.

Portugal and Spain are facing a major heatwave with the mercury expected to soar before peaking at 47C in some areas this weekend.

In Sweden, July was a record hot month and wildfires burnt in parts of the country.
