ED blames MDC Alliance leaders for violence

MDC supporters celebrate in the street outside the MDC Headquarters

Speaking to 263Chat, Dr Victor Chimhutu leader of Zimbabwe Yadzoka, a local democracy pressure group said Zanu PF domination in parliament without the support of the majority spells a bleak future for the country.

The electoral commission this morning confirmed the ruling party had won 109 seats, a day after the opposition accused it of deliberately delaying results in Zanu PF's favour.

The election was Zimbabwe's first election since President Robert Mugabe left office in 2017.

"We hold the opposition MDC Alliance and its whole leadership responsible for this disturbance of national peace", he said, adding the government "went out of its way" to try to ensure the elections were peaceful.

He has already declared he's won the popular vote and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission is preparing the country to accept "fake presidential results".

But EU observers had criticised in the general election.

Iran Rejects Trump Offer Of Talks As A Dream, Without Value
The United States is going after Iran in a rather smart fashion despite the childish rhetoric being traded on social media. In March 2003, the Iranians sent a comprehensive negotiation proposal to the George W.

The country's electoral commission said that Zanu-PF won a two-thirds majority in the national parliament - prompting protests in the capital, Harare. "We are now investigating circumstances surrounding the deaths", national police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said.

He has repeatedly accused Zanu-PF and election authorities of trying to use a flawed electoral register and fixed ballot papers to steal the election.

The 94-year-old former leader had been in power since independence from white minority rule in 1980 until he was forced to resign in November after the military and ruling party turned on him.

It said it had observed several problems, including media bias, voter intimidation and mistrust in the electoral commission, adding that there was an "improved political climate, but un-level playing field and lack of trust".

"On many occasions, preparation, financing, media and hopefully not in the counting - it was advantageous for the ruling party", he told AFP as the mission called for transparency in the release of results. Provided he also emerges the victor of the presidential race, Mr Mnangagwa will have to take on the onerous task of placing Zimbabwe on an even keel after the corruption and diplomatic isolation that marked the 37 years of the Mugabe regime, while also engaging the opposition to ensure that there is no confrontation that blocks developmental works.

Many Zimbabweans looked to the vote as a launching pad for a return to the kind of global acceptance and relative prosperity that the country enjoyed in the first part of the rule of Mugabe, who took office after independence from white minority rule in 1980.

Destructive California fires could be 'the new normal'
Alyce Macken said she had only minutes to flee with her husband Ted from the flames sweeping closer to her home in Redding. Despite the improved mood, a sixth person was killed in the fire, according to Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko.

The violence started soon after opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Nelson Chamisa claimed he had won the popular vote.

Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa has tweeted that he was "positive" about the results and urged Zimbabweans to patiently wait for the final announcement.

In an indication of the growing tension, a crowd of about 100 MDC supporters gathered outside a Harare hotel where election results were being announced but police blocked the entrance to the building, a Reuters witness said.

After vote-rigging allegations in previous elections under Mugabe, Mnangagwa this time allowed European Union observers back into the country for the first time in years.

Some local and worldwide independent newspapers put the number of deaths at three amid reports of skirmishes between the police, members of the Zimbabwe national army and other security agents in the capital, Harare.

It followed a surprise press conference at which he stunned observers and called for voters to reject ZANU-PF, his former party.
