Facebook tiptoes into China by opening a startup incubator

A Facebook spokesman said the United States tech giant was setting up an "innovation hub" in Zhejiang, eastern China, to allow it to "support Chinese developers, innovators and start ups". It already has similar hubs in other markets such as India, South Korea, France, and Brazil.

The only app Facebook-owned app that runs unhindered in China too was blocked at the beginning of September previous year. Facebook said it wanted to use the subsidiary to coordinate with Chinese developers in the closely censored market.

Known for being the headquarters of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba and many other tech groups, the capital of Zhejiang, Hangzhou will be the center of Facebook's new hub.
